The 76th Cannes Film Festival opened on May 14, with a slew of luminaries, including directors, artists, and film fans, gathered at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès to celebrate cinema. Coralie Farguet, a French director, received an 11-minute standing ovation when her horror movie “The Substance” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film, which starred Hollywood celebrities Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley in the key parts, was well-liked by viewers. “The Substance” is the only project this year to garner such a prolonged round of applause from the Cannes crowd, according to a report in PTI. Cannes filmgoers are known for their strong feelings toward the films they see, which can vary from standing ovations to outright walkouts.
The movie has received praise for its feminist interpretation of the horror subgenre in reviews. Moore and Fargeat made their Cannes premieres with the movie as well. The Substance centers on Moore, a middle-aged actress, who chooses to test a strange substance that claims to bring out one’s best self—a figure played by Qualley in this case. “This is my first time having a film premiere in Cannes,” Demi Moore remarked. I’m overjoyed to be here. It was rather intensive, and I’m a little tired.”
The movie, which is supported by Universal Pictures and Working Title Films, also features Hugo Diego Garcia, Dennis Quaid, Phillip Schurer, and Joseph Balderrama. The Cannes Film Festival 2024 is scheduled to end on May 25, having started on May 14.

Cannes 2024: Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley Film Gets 11-Minute Ovation
The audience at the Grand Lumiere Theatre gave the graphic body-horror film The Substance, which made its global debut Sunday night in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, a nine-minute standing ovation.
Starring Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid, and Margaret Qualley (who also appears in Kinds of Kindness, a competition title at this year’s fest), the film marks the second directorial endeavor and English-language debut of French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, who also wrote, produced, and edited it. All of these individuals attended the screening.
A gruesome fantasy that is a warped cross between the great films Sunset Boulevard and Freaks, it is one of the most out-there Cannes competition pictures since Titane—and, with the appropriate jury combination, may follow that film to a major festival prize, if not for the film, then for Moore.
The picture, produced by Working Title’s art house mavens Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, was initially scheduled for universal distribution but will now be released in the United States through MUBI. Other areas were sold to other distributors throughout the festival.
In addition to the cast, the crowd featured Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Abel Ferrara, and Carla Bruni.
