Season 2 of “The Rings of Power” will be available on Prime Video this summer, and with Sauron in the picture, disaster is sure to ensue in Middle-Earth.
The new season 2 teaser trailer makes this plain. It focused almost exclusively on the growing threat to Tolkien’s world, concluding with our first look at Charlie Vickers as Sauron and showcasing his raw might.
However, a recent interview has revealed exactly how significant a part he will play; in fact, the creators of the “Rings of Power” show feel that Sauron’s ascent is the main driver for the creation of the program. Patrick McKay said the plot has a lot of promise and likened him to some of the finest characters to ever grace the small screen.
McKay told Empire: “If you had to select one reason for doing this show and setting it in this age of the mythology, that’s it. From the beginning, we discussed Milton’s “Paradise Lost,” Walter White, and Tony Soprano, and how Sauron has the potential to be like these great villain-heroes – hero meaning protagonist. “That is the greatest untold story on the screen.”
He went on to say that now that he has been identified, Sauron’s existence in this version of Middle-Earth should begin to connect the many story lines. “All our tales start to become one story,” McKay said, “and the one story is how the re-emergence of Sauron affects everyone and threatens the entire planet.
What to Expect in ‘The Rings of Power’ Season 2
McKay has also given us a strong understanding of that. Tolkienites will be aware that, at this point in the Second Age, Sauron assumed a friendly demeanor in order to begin influencing people.
At this stage, he was known as Annatar, “The Lord of Gifts,” rather than the armor-clad, enormous man from Peter Jackson’s prologue to “The Fellowship of the Ring.” On the surface, he appeared to be a helpful presence, sharing his wisdom with others (particularly Celebrimbor, the skilled smith). He secretly constructed the One Ring to bind people who wore the other mystical rings.
According to the Empire report, “Annatar” is mentioned, implying that Sauron will continue to use this guise. The summary says, “Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel and without an army or allies, the emerging Dark Lord must now rely on his own cleverness to restore his might and oversee the building of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to tie all of Middle-earth to his dark will.
Building on the grand scale and ambitions of Season One, the new season challenges each character to find their place in a world that is rapidly heading towards tragedy, plunging even the most loving and sensitive people into a rising tide of darkness. The forces of good will struggle even harder to protect what matters most to them – each other – as friendships are strained and nations begin to fracture between elves, orcs and humans, wizards and harfoot.
In addition to Sauron, another famous person will be seen in real action in the upcoming season. Rory Kinnear has been cast to play the incredibly strong and mysterious character Tom Bombadil.
