The Crown Makes Golden Globes History

The Crown made history at the Golden Globes this morning on a good day for stars across the pond.

The Netflix royal saga became the first show nominated for Best Television Series—Drama for each of its seasons, and the latest nomination pitted it against films like 1923, The Last of Us, and Succession. On January 7th,.

With The Crown’s final run of episodes wrapping up, there’s little change for the sometimes controversial but always popular Netflix hit, with EP Suzanne Mackie describing the Globes record as an “absolute honor and privilege.”

The Crown actors had a strong nomination, with Imelda Staunton and Dominic West, who play the Queen and Prince Charles, respectively, receiving recognition.

This made for a strong day of nominations for Brits, with almost half of the nominations for male and female TV drama performances coming from across the pond.

Other nominees included Helen Mirren for 1923, Bella Ramsey for The Last of Us, and, surprisingly, Succession’s Brian Cox. In the year of the Crown and the Succession, it always seemed as if the British were in for a treat. Other notable British actors to receive nominations include Rachel Weisz for Amazon Prime Video’s Dead Ringers and David Oyelowo for Paramount+’s Lawman: Bass Reeves.

British stars were less successful in the film categories, but Carey Mulligan won one for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama for her performance opposite Bradley Cooper in Maestro. In the men’s category, Irish fortunes remained strong, with nominations for Barry Keoghan (Saltburn), Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), and Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers).
